Hey Amanda, if you are certain that you did not turn on Airplane Mode (this is indicated by an airoplan icon in the place of network bars) then either your SIM card slot is somewhat defect (could be the contacts being partially dirty or bent) or the device is carrier banned or blacklisted for one reason or the other. I would you seek further assistance from your retailer or carrier's customer care.
