Hi

I am looking to build a home server for my home, I have 3 computers and I want to back them up and sync/stream from my server to my computers.

I don't know what are the best operating system for the home server, I had a look at Windows Home Server 2003, but the UI is based on Windows XP (I don't actually like that), however I had seen a Windows Home Server 2003 with a Windows Vista Kernel and UI, and thats ok, but I don't know wether you can buy them still. Please help me find new suggestions for the best OS for my home server.

Thanks! :-)

Hi. Assuming all computers are Windows based - if yes, then Linux is out of the picture unless if you have a good background of the Linux environment and need the server for more files intensive purpose. Now within Windows, the cheapest and yet satisfying for your purpose would be to turn one of your Windows 8 PC's in to a home server host. Have a look at this: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2026643/set-up-windows-8-as-a-home-server.html

Hi

Yes, all the computers are running Windows 7. Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately I don't like Windows 8 at all, I had it once and that same day I went back to the good old Windows 7. :-)

I agree that Win 7 remains the best choice if you do not have any must have app that insist on Windows 8/8.1 environment or if you have a touchscreen machine . Have a look at this http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/start-here-to-set-up-a-home-network-in-windows-7 if you had not.

Hi

Yes I have had a look at that, but I am looking for software that is specially designed for home servers.
My choices are 1: Ubuntu Server
                         2: Amahi Home Server
                         3: FreeNAS
                         4: OpenMediaVault
                         5: Windows Home Server
                         6: OpenFiler
                         7: ClearOS
I just don't know which one to buy. Some are free I know, but I am willing to pay for the best OS for my home server

Thanks! :-)

I thought you did but I soon began to seek for the easiest out to the desired end. With a dedicated server software in mind, I would say the first three are rightly set and you could peaceably choose therefrom. Which of the three to choose will depend on non-core feature aspects like paid/free, UI, platform, etc. as they are indeed in the top three in popularity and functionality for home server needs.
