The easiest way out of a pattern locked device is a hard reset. To do this:

NB: All user data and applications will be deleted and the phone restored to its factory settings/defaults

1. Turn the phone off
2. Press and hold the Volume Up key + the Home key + the Power key (all at the same time until the phone turns on
3. At the recovery menu you get, use the Volume down key to scroll to "Wipe data/factory reset" and short press the Home key to select the highlighted option
4. At the next screen use the Volume down key to scroll to "Yes---delete all user datat" and short press the Home key to select the highlighted option
5. Short press the Home key to restart the Samsung Galaxy and the reset should be completed and the phone ready to be re-configured.
