Flashed it with an Alcatel 4018A (pop D1) after learning that they are of the same hardware - what could have caused this issue exactly. It will only connect on Edge [E] now :(

Hey Kulani, This proves to be a baseband version issue. Because different regions uses different bands,  ROMs are molded with the destination region in mind. It must then be that you have flashed a ROM that has a differing baseband that does note support your regions' band. A quick fix would be to find a friend locally with a VF685 running the original stock ROM/firmware and take a backup and install in the place of the currently installed firmware. In short, what is needed is a stock ROM for/from your region. Not very easy task normally.

The VF685 device we worked upon also came up without 3G after the ROM flashing

If you can obtain and flash the original stock ROM/firmware, the phone should come with 3G and a working earpiece (with no need for hand free). It is just that taking a backup from another VF685 may involve installing a Custom Recovery onto it first and the owner may be reluctant.

You need to find a friend who owns the same Vodafone model - then use a PC software called 'MTK Droid Tools' to take it backup.
